Prescriptions
Ordering a repeat prescription
- Please allow 48 hours (two working days) to process your prescription request. Prescriptions are issued for 28 days.
- Order your repeat prescription a week before your medication runs out, and if you receive blister packs, re-order in week 3.
When you order a prescription online, you can have it sent electronically to a pharmacy of your choice. This is called a nomination.

Available Monday to Thursday, 9am to 12pm and 2pm to 4pm, and Friday 9am to 12pm (closed at 12pm on Fridays).

Order Online
Ordering online is the quickest and easiest way to order repeat prescriptions. Use one of the online apps to order your prescription, check on the status of your prescription, and to nominate your Pharmacy of choice.

The benefits:
- The quickest way of requesting repeat prescriptions - you are communicating directly with the practice.
- You can send the request at any time 24/7 and it will be dealt with during surgery opening hours.
- You can specify which pharmacy you wish to collect from. This ensures that prescriptions always get to the right place first time.
In Person
You can order in person by returning the right-hand half of a previous prescription for the required medications.
Please post your repeat medication requests in the box located next to our Reception desk. Request forms are available from our waiting area.

Pharmacy ordering
You can collect your prescription from the pharmacy destination of your choice. Just let our Prescribing team or clinician know where you would like your prescription to go. You can also nominate your pharmacy online using the NHS app or speak to your preferred Pharmacy and they can do this for you.

There are 3 dispensing chemists in Cockermouth. You must allow at least 2 full working days after requesting a prescription before collection from the chemist.

Home deliveries
If you would like to have your medications delivered, you must arrange this with your preferred pharmacy each time. We are not responsible for deliveries and cannot ensure that the pharmacy delivers on time.
Our Dispensary
Open Monday to Friday 9am to 6:30pm
We are a dispensing practice, which means that patients who live more than a mile from a pharmacy and are registered as a dispensing patient can collect their prescription from our on-site dispensary. By using the practice dispensary, the NHS payment for your prescriptions can be used to improve other surgery services and we thank you for the support.
Questions about your prescription
If you have questions about your medicine, your local pharmacists can answer these. They can also answer questions on medicines you can buy without a prescription.
The NHS website has information on how your medicine works, how and when to take it, possible side effects and answers to your common questions.

Further prescriptions information
Medication reviews
For the safety of our patients, all repeat medication will be reviewed by one of our clinicians. This is normally in your month of birth or at more frequent intervals depending on the type of medication you are prescribed. We need to review your medication to make sure the medications are working as they should be and are still the most suitable for you. We may also ask you to attend for an annual review to check you overall health, this may include a blood pressure check, blood test, ECG or Urine sample.
You will receive an invitation for this in your month or birth via text or telephone call. You could also set yourself a reminder to give us a call when it is your birthday month.
Important
Failure to attend for this important review may delay your future prescriptions; we will be unable to reissue medication without these safety checks.

What to do with old medicines
Take it to the pharmacy you got it from or bring it in to the surgery. Do not put it in your household bin or flush it down the toilet.
About pharmacists
As qualified healthcare professionals, pharmacists can offer advice on minor illnesses such as:
- coughs
- colds
- sore throats
- tummy trouble
- aches and pains
They can also advise on medicine that you can buy without a prescription.
Many pharmacies are open until late and at weekends. You do not need an appointment.
Most pharmacies have a private consultation room where you can discuss issues with pharmacy staff without being overheard.
